always back to Bogart
Where were you last night?
That´s so long ago, I don’t remember
Will I see you tonight?
I never make plans that far ahead.
Casablanca Script. 1942
I was having a beer earlier with a friend (both of us architects) and it came across through the conversation Annie Choi’s open letter to architects and then we started to talk about how stupid it’s to be proud of being the one who has slept less, or how difficult is to make your living with that a tight schedule and not knowing what is going to be with your life in your near future. It is not easy to take long term decisions when you don’t have a clear idea of your life and you live in a very unstable world.
So I was was going back home and two images came through my mind. Two of my all time heroes. Homer Simpson and Humphrey Bogart (well not exactly Bogart, more Sam Spade detective from The Maltese Falcon, and Rick, from Casablanca).
The first one is the classical family guy, father and husband that has done everything you can imagine from astronaut to owner of Denver Broncos and member of the Spinal Tap concert Tour, and without losing his life neither his family.
The second one is the anonymous hero, someone that has sacacrified his life to achieve a bigger goal, even he doesn’t want to admit it and nobody would never know. Anonymous heroes shaping and improving our lives, sacrifying their own lives in pro of some ideas. Not that easy, even less when loves come to town.
I am thinking, can you imaging a mix between RICK (Bogart) and Homer. I really like this mix up of characters.
